Cooling system components of BMW E60 models include: Radiator and coolant overflow tank. M54 and 8-cylinder engines: Belt driven coolant pump bolted to the front of the engine block. N52 and N54 engines: Electric coolant pump bolted to the right front of the engine block. Electric cooling fan attached to rear of radiator.
1. Leaving the Lights on. Probably the most common cause of a drained battery, many drivers have accidentally left their lights on overnight at some point or another. Because the engine isn’t running, and therefore the alternator isn’t powering them, the lights turn to the battery for power.Running or not, that voltage appears to be too low. If the engine was not running while you took the reading, low battery or dead cell (should be around 12.6V charged battery). If it was running, the alternator/regulator isn't working (should be around 13.5-14.5V). It was 11.5 in both cases running and not.
Load the battery with 15 amperes for one minute (by turning the headlights on with car off) Put a DMM across the battery terminals to check voltage. See chart below for analysis. There are two levels of coding: (1) resetting options, where you enable (for example) fog lights and highbeams at the same time. Generally easy when you use things like Carly for BMW. Harder when you try to use coding apps provided by BMW. Changing to a $700 oem battery and registering to computer, and even changing starter motor didn't correct this occasional no-start. It is very embarassing when vallet person runs back saying your car isn't starting. 2.
